All students are individuals, and need a tutor who can meet their particular needs. At the same time, there are certain characteristics that all good tutors should have. Whether you’re looking for special individual characteristics for a tutor, or general characteristics for tutors, here you will find an “A to Z” checklist of characteristics that you will want to consider as you seek the best tutor for your situation.
As you go through this list:
- ask yourself if each characteristic is important to you. Some may be more important to you than others.
- ask others who have used the services of a tutor you are considering if they have found the tutor has the characteristics you are seeking.
- ask questions of and observe potential tutors themselves (If you think you have found a good tutor, but are still a bit unsure, ask for a sample lesson or two in which you as parent/guardian can stay and observe the interaction between your child and the tutor. You may have to pay, but it is worth it to be sure you have the right tutor).
This checklist is divided into five easy-to-read sections. And if you can think of other important tutor characteristics, be sure to let me know in the comments section below, so I can add them to the list! Click on the links below to learn more about the following characteristics.
Section 5: Sensitivity, Social Awareness, Written Contracts.
What other tutor characteristics would you like us to discuss? Let us know in the comments section. Thank you!
